Our Story

Our Story: Tradition, Community, and the Next Chapter

Our story began when Robert Kowalewski and Howard Schelde, brothers-in-law, entered the restaurant business with a Mr. Steak franchise in 1968. Through hard work and long hours, they expanded from one location to seven successful restaurants across Michigan. In 1986, the concept evolved into Schelde’s Grille & Spirits, continuing a family tradition built on quality food and genuine hospitality.

Over the years, the family created and operated many memorable concepts, including the original Jose Babushka’s, Grand Rapids Brewing Company, Freshwater Lodge, TraVino Traverse Wine & Grille, Bowers Harbor Inn & The Bowery, The Wanigan, Auntie Pasta’s, The Cove, Bonfire Bistro & Brewery, and Rio Grand Steakhouses. Today, the second generation of the Kowalewski family proudly continues that tradition.

Eleven years ago, we opened Jose Babushka’s in Gaslight Village in East Grand Rapids with a simple goal: to bring people together. We wanted to create a place where friends, families, and neighbors could gather, share conversation, enjoy great food, and make lasting memories.

What a ride it has been, packed with unforgettable moments, plenty of laughs, and the incredible community that has grown with us. We are truly grateful to every guest who has shared a meal, a moment, or a margarita (or two) along the way.

Now, we’re excited to introduce the NEW JOSE’S. Think a fresh look, an updated menu, and big screens for all your favorite games. We’re keeping the classics you love while adding a whole lineup of new shareables, burgers, wings, sandwiches, wraps, and some seriously delicious salads. Something for the whole family to enjoy.

As we turn the page to this next chapter, our mission remains the same as it was in 1968: great food, warm hospitality, and a welcoming social gathering place where people can come together.

Thank you for being part of our story.
